Good question. By tension I mean the kind of thing where you make the situation slightly uncomfortable for either of you. For example, if a girl stands at a bar next to you, look her in the eyes and give her a subtle smile and perhaps a bit of eyebrow action (just a slight raise of your eyebrows to signify your interest). Then just wait, and watch for her response.

First off, this takes guts. It's scary to put yourself out there and generate some tension for her to respond to.

Secondly, she will feel ever so slightly dominated by your actions. You have totally set the frame and the substance of the interaction, and you didn't even have to say a word.

Don't ever be the one to break the tension. I have known girls for years that I have never broken one of these 'tense' moments with, and they still love it. It never gets old.

If they say, "This guy I know is being a dick." Our first instinct is to try and diffuse the situation, but instead of agreeing (like a good little nice-guy), crank up the tension, say something like, "That's probably because you're too needy." You have increased the tension, rather than trying to side with her just because you want something from her.

It is rare for a girl to experience this. Quite often they will be slightly dumbfounded that you had the balls to say something like that. They will certainly be impressed, even if they do get defensive and/or start attacking you verbally. If they do, just crank the tension even higher. Never back down; always have a better answer; don't apologise; don't retreat; don't surrender! :-)
